Written and Oral Statements before and during CSW 63

When the expert group met to prepare for CSW, NGOs with ECOSOC status were given the opportunity to hand in a written statement on next year’s topic of the Commission on the Status of Women. This statement may not exceed 2,000 words and has usually to be submitted by the beginning of October in the previous year, e.g. October 2018 for CSW 63 in March 2019. Depending on the topic, the task forces and UN Representatives specialized in the field of the Commission will be asked to give their input. Vice President UN edits these contributions and brings them into a coherent form.

Up until three weeks before the Commission starts, NGOs with ECSOC status have the opportunity toexpress an interest in delivering an oral statement during the general discussion at CSW. During the commission some of the NGOs will be informed that they have been chosen to give a speech of 3 minutes. The speech is prepared by the Vice President UN. It covers topics that were either not mentioned in the written statement or need special attention according to the view of BPW International.

Usually this speech is delivered by the International President or the Vice President UN. This year, both were on site inspection for the next International Congress in 2020 when BPW International was asked to speak. Fortunately, our Young BPW on the Executive Board, Neelima Basnet, was so helpful and changed her flight. We were very proud of the focus that was on our Young BPW during this time.

Oral Statement of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (IFBPW) Our – March, 15 2019

Madam Chair, Exellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women we would like to convey our deepest sympathy to New Zealand.

Our statement focuses on three points:

· Government Procurement SDG 5.1

IFBPW has always worked for gender equality and equal salary for equal work. We are still significantly short of achieving equal pay or equal parity across the world. One very important sector for procurement are the governments. Their financial agreements across the private sector represent 10-20% of the national GDPs.

Our Recommendations to implement SDG 5.1

· Governments install quotas to facilitate the access for small and medium women led businesses and companies to government procurement.

· Companies which get government procurement have to prove to the government that in their company equal pay for equal work is a reality.

· Companies providing direct sourcing for governments should include a minimum of 30% women in senior leadership positions.

Unpaid care work SDG 5.4

There are significant structural barriers for women to achieve gender equality. Disproportionate burden of unpaid work at home, caring for small children, household chores, caring for older and/or disabled family members. To combine these tasks with an employment, women often work in the informal economy. They are not able to provide for social security and pension funds. The consequence is that they often end up in poverty after retirement. Taking in account that the need of care work is increasing until 2030 and beyond we recommend to implement SDG 5.4 that:

· Governments recognize unpaid care work through provisions towards the social security and pension funds.

· Governmentsprovide public services, infrastructure and social protection policies and promote shared responsibility within the household and the family as nationally appropriate

Clean Water and Sanitation SDG 6, 4 and 3

Clean Water and sanitation have a huge impact on the lives of women and girls. Today girls and women miss out on school and work because there is no water and sanitation and they have to stay home during the time of their menstruation. Women use important time to carry water from the fountains and wells to their homes. Polluted water leads to a high child mortality and illness of the population.

Our Recommendations SDG 6, 4 and 3

· By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all

· By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally

The sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 11 to 22 March 2019.

Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are expected to attend the session.
